It’s no big secret for those who know me that simple headshots of adults aren’t my favorite portrait variety, but I’ve learned something that helps them to be more interesting to me. When I have a job where the requirement is only one image needed for a specific purpose I will challenge myself to see just how quickly I can reach a place of what I believe to be genuine trust between the subject and I.
This has less to do with particularly deep or even witty conversation than the unspoken energy exchanged that invites a sense of safety and acceptance in really opening to another person. Mostly we go through our days avoiding this with strangers, but I find it so exhilarating to practice this with my subjects, and am rewarded with the feeling that there is always an underlying connection available that softly communicates we are at heart more alike than different.
Expecting to find this wondrously seems to be all that is necessary for its manifestation.
