Everything today is based on quick impressions, and it seems the decibel level has risen to the extreme, with not only business entities soliciting us but individuals as well. Everyone is vying to be a rockstar, branding themselves in a way, collecting fans at a dizzying rate, becoming obsessed with creating a buzz where none exists, and speaking in tweets rather than genuine conversation. One has to be super speedy and clever to be heard in 140 characters or less.
The art of photography demands just the opposite. The photographer must step in, but then pause and look thoughtfully at the subject until the surrounding deafening buzz dissipates and quiet subtleties can be noted. To me, it’s a summons to meditation, not so much seeking what is grand and worth emulating on the exterior, but what is common and worth connecting to inside us all.
