We carry pictures in our heads of how our lives would look in an ideal world, and then it seems we spend all our time in a relentless and vigilant effort to make the pictures in our clever and creative minds match those on the outside. We’re certain that with enough action we can change people and circumstances and mold them into a way that will make us feel better when we look on them. This almost never works, and even if it did we wouldn’t feel better, because the pictures in our head are all bogus.
What is trustable are the pictures we carry in our hearts. These are the images that reflect our true nature, and will lead us to seeing beauty no matter where we look. These are the pictures where nothing has to be different to be okay. These are images ultimately created from a place of surrender and acceptance.
I so love the craft of photography because each time I pick up my camera I’m confronted with the conscious decision of how I want to see that which is in front of me--with my head or with my heart. Creating photographs demands that I make a choice, and when I’ve chosen poorly the resulting images will be just as meaningless as those that exist in my head.
