Although certainly not any kind of sterling portrait, this exemplifies perfectly the process of photographing a two year old boy. A whole lot of chasing, milliseconds worth of eye contact, and an unbridled spirit that simply can’t be contained in a single frame.
Sometimes I think I must have some sort of fatal attraction to things elusive, because I always experience a weird kind of rush when I run up against these little guys at a photo session. Could it be that deep down I believe that in order for something to be worthwhile it must be difficult to attain? It’s possible, but perhaps the underlying feeling is really the recognition that magic is perpetually fleeting, just as a two year old boy. We may momentarily catch a glimpse, but to try to hold it tight and keep it ours forever only causes it to quickly dissolve.
