Is it just me, or does this new dad have a little Yul Brenner action going on? Too young to be familiar with either the actor or the musical “The King and I”? Well, you’re just plain missing out. Ü
For the most part, I don’t have great recall on events of my childhood…..don’t know why really, but I’ve forgotten many things and most details. I sometimes wonder if being so hyper sensitive made it necessary for me to become an internal minimalist. All that feeling and thinking overwhelming my mind and making it downright cluttered in there. So I must have subconsciously decided to neaten things up a bit, put all those childhood details in boxes labeled “good feeling” and “not so good feeling”, and hauled them off to a long term storage facility somewhere.
Interesting though, how it’s the senses that will suddenly bring an old dormant memory back to life. I saw this client and immediately was flooded with how I felt when sitting with my mom and watching “The King and I” on television one blistery Minnesota winter afternoon. I must have been 9 or 10 years old, quite young, but old enough to understand and feel the romance of the movie. When this man held his baby girl and looked into the camera it was all I could do to not break out singing, “Shall we dance”. I clearly remembered giggling and twirling around the basement floor later that day with my best friend, attempting to dance like Yul Brenner and Deborah Kerr had in the movie.
The box labeled “good feeling” arrived at my feet and been unexpectedly jarred open, all due to the visual catalyst of this Yul Brenner look alike.
