Sometimes I think that my favorite expressions to photograph are those that follow when everything has gone wrong and not at all in the direction we’d hoped. A seven pound colicky baby can single handedly strip each idyllic photograph from one’s grasp, and leave everyone feeling as if they’ve just done battle with a great warring giant.
Exhausted, all participants finally give up the sugar coated dreams of perfection, and peacefully rest. But is it resignation that I see when looking through the viewfinder? No, I don’t think so. It feels to me as if something important is being quietly realized in these moments….a newfound capacity for surrender to a powerful love that is unconditional and largely unexplainable.
