I guess what fascinates about this image is how nonchalant the father appears to be while holding his newborn son. Typically first time dads exhibit much awkwardness and uncertainty when holding an infant so small, even looking to me for reassurance that they are “doing it right”. So it seemed rather remarkable that this inexperienced father conveyed such ease with the delicate work of baby holder. Intently watching the skiers on the lake beyond his back porch, he almost seemed oblivious to the fact that he was cradling a newborn baby against his chest.
My intention was to photograph close-ups of the baby’s face, and not to show the father, who was hot and tired after a long session. But I found this composition including the father's profile to be rather honest and storytelling, and a little bit unexpected. While fairly certain it would not sell, I was happy enough to add the shot to my personal collection of unguarded moments and unintended frames.
