Last summer my kids were introduced to the movie “Zoolander” on the drive from Florida to North Carolina. They immediately were taken with it, watching multiple times on our way there alone, with my driving preventing me from otherwise putting a stop to it. So began the summer of the magnum face. I don’t think a day went by last summer when one of them wasn’t striking a pose and giving this face, embarrassing me in public, and unfortunately showing up in many of the photographs I took of them during our stay in the mountains. I seriously regret their seeing this movie.

Since that time I’ve periodically noticed the magnum face showing up on some of the little subjects I photograph for work. Never provoked, this expression is evidently quite common with the baby/toddler crowd. And since the summer of zoolander, I find it hard to keep from laughing hysterically when this particular face shows up in front of my camera.

When I first witnessed the magnum face on this little guy I recently photographed I thought it to be a fluke, but after he presented this same expression multiple times I’m thinking he’s seriously giving Ben Stiller a run for his money. He’s only two, and anyone who photographs kids knows you don’t make a two year old do anything……so this was most purely and genuinely a little magnum in the making.
